“Pech”,
“Chortis”, “Lencas”, “Tawahkas”, “Misquitos”, “Tolupanes” and “Garifunas” are
the seven ethnic groups that inhabit Honduras, which approximately represents
14% of our population. The “Pech” people’s residence extends from the region of
Caratasca to state of Gracias a Dios. “Chortis” are presumed to be Mayan descendants
and occupy territory in Copan and Ocotepeque. “Lencas” inhabit within the
states of Lempira, Intibucá, and La Paz. ”Tawahkas” are found in “La Mosquitia” in Gracias a Dios, Olancho
and the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua. The “Tolupán” population extends through all the state
of Yoro, and La Montaña de La Flor and Marale in the state of Francisco
Morazán. “Garifuna” ethnic group are located mostly in Bay Islands and the
state of Atlántida.
Little has
the world heard about Honduras, and most of those topics relates to it tend to
be negative. Media magnifies in such a big way the “any third-world-country
problems” we have. Yes, we have trouble, just like any other nation in the
world does, but in Honduras good things also occur and because of those “good
things”, I would never change for anything in the world being a Honduran. Having
Bay Islands, the third best coffee in the world, and being the third most happy
and unworried people in Latin America despite of the problems are thing not
many know, but being a Honduran goes way further than that; we are warm, loud and happy
people, we love to laugh, to feel the love in each hug we give, to make
foreigners feel like they’re at home, to treat kindly and help people and see
their smile in a signal of “thank you”, we got these addictive food called
“baleadas” which can drive anyone crazy, in other words, being Honduras is being proud of every positive thing we accomplish and make us un
