WHY social
networking???
Why social networking? It is simply because social
networking is one of a way for one person to meet up with other people on the
internet. That's not all though. Some people use social networking sites for
meeting new friends on the internet as what we are doing now connecting with
each other from Honduras and Malaysia. As for me,i use social network as a
platform to update news with old friends and vice versa news from them. OK, I
am a food addict and dessert lover but i scared gain weight ( who else want to
be fat while looking at those Victoria Secret model super hot body, right?). I
always get updated with all those latest restaurant with good food and nice
ambiance which i tempt to try it out especially weekends brunch which is now on
trend in KL city.
Acme Bar& Coffee (nice ambiance)
Marble 8( dinner with KL Twin Tower view)
Sky Bar (nice place to chill around with companion and a cocktail, perhaps)
There may be as many as a thousand different social networking
sites out there by now or more to come. Many of them are just out there to help
you meet up with new people and socialize. Some are created to help you find
old friends. Others are there to help you in some way, share the same thought,
interest and etc. These would be the niche networks for larger groups with same
interest such as for business people, sports ,freelance (part-timer like
myself) and many more.
Can Malaysian social
media be censored?
Periodically, the Internet censorship in Malaysia is raised
under the beneficial of “regulating” the Internet by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC). Social media such as Facebook, have not been spared the
threat of censorship. It was said that Facebook should be blocked as it
consider a threat to the national security by Umno Supreme Council member Datuk
Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim.
In my opinion, social media can't be censored as there is always other alternatives to find
sources from somewhere else if social media were to be censored. Social media
plays a huge role inthe economic growth for businesses and investment
purposes. For instance, how much the Malaysian government spent on social media
advertising during the recent general election. We won't know how much as Facebook
does not report its revenues by country. It also proved by our Prime Minister,
Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the recent Umno general assembly that he pressed on
Umno members to master new media as the key to reaching new voters. He also celebrated
for securing two million ‘likes’ on his Facebook. This shows that it is not
likely that the prime minister will be keen on banning Facebook when he himself
is heavily reliant on it as a tool for political engagement.
In other word, I would say that it is all depending on how
we use social media in a good way. We have our freedom to use the social media
but bare in mind to use it wisely. We should be grateful unlike to what happened
in the North Korea which fully controlled by a family dynasty based on
"Juche" philosophy with limited internet excess.
