What does it means to be honduran?

Being honduran means many things to me. Means to be proud of your country no matter how many bad things happen, means that you always want to put up the name of Honduras. Honduras is a small country in the center of America continent, we are the heart of America. Because of the excellent geographical location, we can enjoy both Pacific and Atlantic ocean. In the south of our country we have the pacific ocean, there is Gulf of Fonseca with nice islands, islets, beaches and an enyojable climate. In the north we have our carribean, in which consists of the most beautiful beaches, islands in Central America, for example Bay Islands and Cayos Cochinos. We also have the second of the world’s largest coral reef.
Also in Honduras there is the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, that is located on the wathershed of Río Plátano,  in the Mosquitia, in the north-east Honduras. The reserve is one of the few and largest remains of tropical forests in Central America. Has an abundant and varied plant and wildlife. In its mountainous landscape sloping down to the carribean coast, there is over 2,000 indigenous people wo have preserved their traditional way of life. It has been inscribed o  UNESCO’S World Heritage List in Danger to mobilize for its preservation.
As we know the Mayan civilization expanded from Yucatan(Mexico), Guatemala and Honduras. In Honduras we have the ruins of the ancient Mayan civilization, that is located in Copan, that is in the west of our country, the place is named “Copán Ruinas” in english is translate as Copan Ruins, is an arquelogical place where tourists can go and see the ruins of the ancient temples of the Mayan civilization.
Honduras have seven ethinic groups, which are Garifunas, Tolupanes, Lencas, Misquitos, Pech, Chortís, Tawahkas. Is an multi.ethnic country, the population comprises 85% Mestizos, 6% Amerindian, 8%  Caucasian and 1% black. We come from different races, such as spanish, german, italian, arab, africans and others, we are a mixture of races, but we all respect each other no matter which is our ancestry.  In our country we don’t have racism issues, I think is because we come from different races, and there is not a specific way of “honduran looking”, we are all hondurans.
In our gastronomy, you can find the delicious baleadas and burritas that are made from tortilla, egss, beans. Our gastronomy is very varied and our diet consists of tortillas, platain, eggs, beans, corn, rice, sea food and many more. It depends also on the region, because gastronomy varies from the region, that can be divided by North, South, Central, Western.

Being honduran to me means, be proud of my country, have the hope that everything will get better with time. Being honduran means to be proud of those five stars on our flag. I love my country, I love the people, I love the food, the culture. Honduras yes is a dangerous country, where corruption, murder, robbery, organized crime, poverty are present everyday. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be proud of being called Honduran. I want the best for my country, I really want people to believe that everything will change for good, it depends on us, not on the goverment, but on us. Changing the negative attiude Honduras can progress and be that country Hondurans dream of, no more murder, crime, corruption, roberry and feel safe when we walk down the Street, we have the potential. I´M PROUD OF BEING HONDURAN!

P/S: The bread in the food pix looks similar to an Indian flat bread we have here called 'chappati.

  3. HELLO! :D
Out of curiosity, I just wanted to ask, how was it like in Honduras in 2012 when the world was supposed to 'end'? Did the Mayan's prediction of the end of the world have any impact on Hondurans?

    1. Well, I remember they did some celebration in a temple in Copán, oh at that time I was at school and my spanish teacher made a debate about this. But personally I never believed that the world was ending.
