Blog 2 What does it mean to be a Malaysian?

What does it mean to be a Malaysian?
Well, this is a very arguable question. For me, I'm proud to be a Malaysian. I love Malaysia's culture, food, places, people, and everything about Malaysia. We, as a Malaysian were brought up by Malaysian culture, we have the same accent, same living style. We grew up in a multi-races country. From kids, we were train to learn how to respect other people and religion. Although there are many races of people in Malaysia, we respect each other and share the same culture. In Malaysia, we have some stall called "mamak stall"(a road-side stall which run by a Indian-Muslim). Everyone goes to mamak stall and have our breakfast. In our lecture class this week, Dr. Sharon said that the mamak actually gather every races of people in Malaysia to have breakfast or lunch or maybe dinner together, I think this is really true. From kids, we like to eat food from mamak stall such as Roti Canai, Chapatti, and mee goreng mamak. Going mamak stall is even becoming part of my life since i always enjoy having mamak food. I have quite a number of friends from other races. We have no difficulties in communicating. Sometimes we hang out together and celebrate festivals together. I cannot deny that Malaysia also have its bad part. Sometimes it really make people frustrated. Everything have its pluses and minuses. So I don't really think that Malaysia won't have it. We, as a Malaysia should accept it and live with it and be proud to be a Malaysian.

Beside about what does it mean to be a Malaysian, Have have all the news reports about race, religion and ethnicity affected me?
Lately, the media in Malaysia have been reporting many news about races which criticise some other races. Almost all of the media in Malaysia always report one sided message. Personally I respect all races and religion in Malaysia. Malaysia's majority population are Malay in ethnicity who are following the Islamic religion. About 8 % is Indian (Hinduism) and 40 % is Chinese who majority following the Buddha religion and Christianity. In the newspaper on 4 October 2013 , they report that Malaysia court rules non-Muslim cannot use the Allah word because Allah is just for Muslim. Personally I think this is not fair for people because I heard that many of my friend who have Christian as their religion were not happy because of this. The government should work more on these stuff so that it won't be a threat for Malaysia. I think media in Malaysia is quite strong to affect people about their thinking and how they look on these incident. I feel that the media in Malaysia is very powerful.

1 Malaysia concept has been introduce quite a long time. This 1 Malaysia concept is introduce by our prime minister, Najib Razak . Malaysian should really adopt it in our real life so that we can maintain the peace of our country. I really looking forward for the day which there are no difference in races and religion in Malaysia.
